THE RAILWAY EMBANKMENT.
Only about forty yards more of the five hundred yards of stone ordered by the Railway Department from the Harbour Board have to be delivered. The wall that has boen built in front of the railway station and thence towards tho Terminus Hotel with this stone in order to prevent the sea encroaching on the Moturoa railway line, has done wonders in keeping the water back, but it is plainly discernible on inspection that a great deal more stona will have to be put down to make a substantial job. The greatest encroachment haa beeu made on the old railway station yard, where a portion of the embankment has no protection whatever. There ths sea has undermined a number of the atones pilsd there which belong to the Public Works Department, with the result that several have toppled 0 ver,and the whole lot are threatened with the same fate. At high water the sea occasionally rushes up, and then scours back with great force. The wild grey rabbit that had its habitation under the rails was nunted for and killed the other day by a gentlemin of sporting proclivities, so that poor bunny was not destined to see ils domicile scoured away by the sea.
