NAMES OF PERSONS DROWNED. [RETJTEB'S OOPrBIGHT TELEGRAMS.] DtJtfKBlN, October 22. — The scanty news of the wreck of the s.s. Cheviot, near QueensclifEe, has caused many aDsious inquiries, as at least three families here have near relatives on board. One of the firemen believed to be on board, and whose parents reside here, was one of those fortunate enough to escape from the wreok of the 8.8. Tararua, at Waipapa Point, but his friends have no intimation whether he has been bo fortunate on this occasion. The following cablegram has been received by the Press Association from Melbourne, giving names of the passengers drowned in the wreck of the Cheviot off! Melbourne Heaas : — Steerage passengers : Mesdames Barker, Clayton, Davis, and Peters ; Mies O'Brien ; Messrs. Robert Jeffrey, Edmund O'Kelly, Lawrence Morrie, Arthur Goodliffe, W. Fobber, J. Hunt, ond J. Parsland. It is donbtful whether the list ia complete, and possibly thero may be one or two others yet to add. A private cable states that Donald Cameron and McCallum, of. Cheviot's crew, are drowned. Campbell was saved. All have relatives in Dunedin. McCallura was on 'laiaroa when wrecked.
It is stated on tho authority of natives who have been to Parihaka lately that Sydney Taiwhanga, the member for the Northern Maori Electorate, who came up from Wellington the other day to lay certain matters affecting the native race before Te Whiti, bus made no impression on the prophet, who is noted for the imperturbability with which he treats anything that tends to trench on hiß power.
