WANGANUI FAILURES.
Mb. W. H. WatT; formerly of tho firm of Taylor and Watt, and at different times member for Wellington in the Provincial Council, and the House of Sepresentatives, has filed a petition in bankruptcy. The statement of assets and liabilities are not yet filed, but it is understood that the latter are very large, and include [one sum of £30,000, for which Mr. Churton, founder of the Maori College, has gone security to the Bank. For a long time Mr. Walts' affairs have been in a veiy bad stale, and Iho present step has been anti cipated. lie lost heavily on tho business canied on by two of his sons ; and the deprtsssion in the vulue of land, stock, &c, has helped to btiwj; about the present reFult. Considerable sympathy is felc in Wunganui for him, as he is ouo of the oldrst settlers, and has been idenliDed with ihe prognt-s of the place from its narliifat dii^s. Iho first meeting of creditors will be held next Thursday.
There are still more bankruptcies to notiiy. AJ. McGregor is the first of tba grocers who has folt the effects of. the present absurd internecine war going on niDouv the giocers. His liabilities are £1148, of which ihe following are duo to Wellington creditors: — Ilarcourt and Co., £101 IGs Id; Eallantjno and Co., £55 93 8d; U.1.C.,£29 13s; Johnotonoand Co., £51 6s Gd. The aesets are valued at £1277, but it is very questionable if they will realise anything like that. G. Ilicke, baker, is another bankrupt, but his etatcnitrit is not jet lijed. H. N. Brown also has iilcd.
