[press association.] gold disoovbbies in the north. Auckland, October 22. A test of 300cwt. of stuff from Strange's property at Waitoa averaged 12s. in bullion per ton. Fifteen tons of staff from Mabel mine, Tui Creek, are to be sent to Frieberg for treatment. Two prospectors, named Baker and Birch, have discovered a reef at Mata Creek, a few miles north of Grahamstown, and have obtained 15 ounces of loose gold. NATURAL GAS. Wellington, October 22. The following is the report on the natural gas on Mr. Crawford's property: — "This gas is a mixture of hydro-carbons. The chief part ia very light carburetted hydrogen, or marsh gas. It contains leas than I'lOOOth part of its volume of carbonic acid gas and no air. It is a feeble illumiuant, but will answer for heating or driving a gas engine very well. It is different from most of the gas that escapes from petroleum springs and the gas that escapes aloug the East Coast, of which more than twenty are known between the East Cape aud Casfclepoint. It probably has its origin in the decomposition of deeply buried swamp matter. — James Hector. " RECENT GALE. The nor'west gale of the last two days was one of the most violent for many years, both in the harbour and on the other side of the ranges, aad Wairarupa. Soarcoly any dainago is reported in town. TRAIN STOPPED BY WIND. The train was stuck-up on approaching the Bimutaka iucliuo by tho fury of the wind, and had to be divided and taken on in soefcions. TvEPOLITED VISIT OF YOGEL TO AUCKLAND. Sir J. Yogel was roportod to have left suddouly for Auckland, by s.s. Te Anau, last night, having engaged his passage at the Dunedin office, but he is, however, still in Wellington.
