The following is the report on the natural gas on Mr. Crawford's property: — "This gas is a mixture of hydro-carbons. The chief part ia very light carburetted hydrogen, or marsh gas. It contains leas than I'lOOOth part of its volume of carbonic acid gas and no air. It is a feeble illumiuant, but will answer for heating or driving a gas engine very well. It is different from most of the gas that escapes from petroleum springs and the gas that escapes aloug the East Coast, of which more than twenty are known between the East Cape aud Casfclepoint. It probably has its origin in the decomposition of deeply buried swamp matter. — James Hector. " RECENT GALE.
