WAITARA.
[from our own oorrespondent.J October 18. — The Gairloch arrived li9re this morning, at half-past 7; her cargo was small, but she took away 179 sheep and 30 i'at cattle for the Auckland market, and ieft again at 9 30 p.m. Notwithstanding the hard times, the Waitara Town Board are pushing on the different works connected with the Board, and I understand that they will call for pnblio tenders for that portion of the road leading from the bridge to the Recreation Grounds, whioh is vory necessary, as it is one of the prettiest sites in the North laland. It is boundod on two sides by the river, and on the third by a terrace. The Dramatio Club gave their seoond entertainment on the evening of Thursday last, in aid of the Waita'a Brass Band, but, owing to the inclemency of the weather, the attendance was amall. The Club has been requeated to repeat the programme, and it is probable they will do so. The programme was an excellent one, and the lady and gentleman performers went through their parts in a moat creditable manner. Messrs. Ogle and Hasluck opened I tho entertainment with a topical aong, which was very amusing. The Area Belle, or Penelope, fHjiwed, and Mr. Ogle deserves sfreat cr tr> for the way in which he perfoi v.d , " part, which was difficult by reason of iiij having to personate a lady's maid at throe days' notice, o~ving to ono of the lady inombers being indisposed. Mra. 31uck ac -Mrs. Croaker, or the " Missus," periormed her part moat admirably, and Mr. Bluck, as Walko Cnalks (a milmnan), was very amusing. Mr. Dickie, as Toaaer, the Grenadier, was the character to a nicety, and the cupboard full of old claret and cake caused the aud;enc9 to laugh immoderately. Mr. Hasluck aa Pitcher, the Policeman, certainly would make a very good member of the police force, as he seems to understand the habits of those gentlemen thoroughly. After an interval of ten minutes, the farce of " The Irish Tiger " was produced. Mr. F. Box, as Sir Charles Lavender, was stupendous. Mr. Bluck, as Alderman Marrowfat, succeeded in acoring "one." Mr. Hasluck, as Mr. Bilbury, was splendid, and Mr. Ogle, as Puddy Ryan, was excellent. All of these gentlemen would cast a shadow over a great many of the pros, who have visited us. Mr. G. Fraser, aa John, was well got up, but it is a pity his beautiful moustache should fade in daylight. Miss Baker, aa Miss Julia Marrowfat, and Mrs. Biuck, as Nancy, her maid, were well appreciated ; in fact, it is v pleasure to spend an evening with amateur performers auch as those at the Waitara Dramatic Club, A few selections by the band, and the entertainment concluded with "God Save the Queen." By the way, Mr. Hughes, the bandmaster, deserves credit for the way he has brought the members on, and if they continue under hia tutorship the band will be seoond to none in the colony.
