GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NEW ZEALAND.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Thursday, October 13.— The Council met at 2.30 p.m. ■In reply to the question if the agreement for the construction of the East and West Coast Railway in the Middle Island had been duly signed, and, if not, under what circumstance and under what understanding certain works in connection therewith have been coornenced, Sir F. Whitaker said the only contract signed was in 1884; the w6rk being pursued was being done under the agreement signed that year. The Hon. Captain Baillie, on the motion of Sir F. Whitake/, was appointed Chairman, of Committees. The ; usual Sessional Committees were appointed, pursuant to notices of motion. On' the motion for the appointment of a Joint. House Committee and the Waste Lands Committee, debates ensued. The debates in each instance were adjourned to next day. As the Imprest Bill and Revenue Bill were expected from the House next day, it was decided that the Council, at its rising on Friday, should adjourn to Saturday. Copies of all papers and correspondence between the Government and the leasingauthorities with reference to any applications under the provisions of the " Public Bodies' Leaseholds Act, 1886," were ordered to be laid on the table. The Council adjourned.
