Auckland, October 10. — >A melancholy boat accident took place on Saturday night at Hobsonville, on the upper reach of the harbour. Two men, Alex. Lynch and Nicholas Hand, with a woman named Sarah Thornton, had just left Hobsonville wharf when tha boat capsized. Lynch and Hand, who were both good Bwiumers, got the woman to grasp the upturned boat, and by their united efforts righted it. They then got into the boat, but had no sooner done so than she again npset. The second endeavour to right her was successful, and Thornton was -placed in the boat, which immediately turned over for the third time. The men then decided to make for the shore, which was abput sixty yards distant, and started swimming towards it, supporting the woman between them. When nearly half the distance to the shore Ales. Lynch suddenly gave tho woman a shove towards Hand, and throwing up his hands disappeared. Hand, who was much exhausted, struggled on with the woman for some distance further, but she slipped from his grasp and sank at once. He then struck out for the shore, which he just managed to reach quite prostrated. A negro named Williams made an unsuccessful effort to rescue the others by swimming from the shore.
Two young men named McLeod also pet off in a boat, but only in time to recover the woman's body.
The accident is attributed to the anxiety to save a bottle of gin from sinking. Lynch's body has not yet been recovered.
