EDUCATION RESERVES BOARD.
TH.IS DAY. The Education Reserves Board met on Friday. Present: Messrs. T. King (chairman), Bauchope, T. Humphries, Parris, and C. E. Rawson. _ '
Tenders. — The tender of J. D. Pope for a piece of land situated in Wallace Place, containing three acres, with a dwellinghouse thereon, for a term of 21 years, at £16 per annum, was accepted. W. Edgeeombe's tender for section 196 (a, b, and c), Game-street, at £1 10s per year, was accepted, the tenancy to be yearly. Louis Patterson was to be informed that his tender for sections 200 to 202, trainestreet, for a term of 21 years, at £1 per year, and paying rates, had not been accepted. School Sites. — Correspondence from the Education Board and from the Survey Office was Tead relative to the survey of sections (school sites) 81, 162, and 25, Hua and Waiwakaiho, and 68, Moa. — It was decided to authorise tbe survey of the school sites referred to. and that Messrs. Skinner and Sole be employed thereon.
Manaia'. — Rhody Slatteiy applied to surrender the lease of section 19, block 3, Waimate, and asked that the improvements now made on the section should be allowed to go towards the rent in arrears. The Board decided that Mr. Slattery should be allowed to transfer his interest in the. two allotments he holds at Manaia, or if be prefers it the Board will accept the surrender of the- 105 acres, the improvements being considered as equal to the arrears of rent, but such improvements being first reported on. Accounts. — Accounts amounting to £29 6s 4d were passed for payment. Tbe Board rose.
The Endeavour, the vessel in which Captain Cook explored the coasts of New Zealand and Australia in 1769, has been enquired about at the Admiralty, but'no trace of thb ship could be found. It is supposed that she has been broken up long since.
The Amateur Opera Company perform to-night for the laßt time the opera of Les Oloches de Corneville, when wo anticipate there will be a very large audience. This performance will be sure to far excel tbe others, for the performers have had an opportunity of perfecting themselves' in any little defects; that are always inseparable with the first performances of a piece.
While one of the gas pipes in Mr. Qilmour'fl new stationer's shop, in Devonstreet, was being tried prior to being fixed on Thursday afternoon, a candle used for smelting solder was placed too near its nozzle, the reßult being that the gas ignited. The flame, however, was put out before any material damage was done.
