DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEF. Wellington, October 7. Te Pimi, a Maori ohief of some influence in the Hutt Distriot, died last night. He is said to be about 94 years old. ' . . NAPIER CATTLE SHOW. Napibb, Ootober 7. The attendance at the oattle show was very large. The bull from the West Coast which won the champion prize in Sydney was only placed third, Mr. H. R. Russell getting Ist and 2nd prize. Foul Play was the champion thoroughbred, with Patrician second. ATTEMPT TO SHOOT A RATE COLLECTOR. Inveroaeqill, Ootober 7. Martin Johnston, a farmer at Langridge, was charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court with attempting to disoharge a gun at a constable. The accused felt aggrieved at being rated for the Waimea Plains railway, and intimated it as his intention of shooting anyone who attempted to collect the rate. Constable Gaiffish went to the farm to distrain for the rate when Johnston went into his hut and brought out a doublebarrelled gun. The constable sprang on him and secured him. The gun was found to be charged with heavy shot.
