A test football match, for the purpoße of selecting the team to represent the distriot at Manaia on Tuesday against Hawera and Manaia, was played at Waitara on Saturday. The teams were Town I\C. and United F.C. v. Waitara F.C., Tikorangi F.C., and Huirangi F.C. The town fifteen had the wind behind them in the first spelJ, during which the play was very even, but on changing goals the country fifteen had much the best of the play; their heavy forwarda, assisted by good backs, compelled the New Plymouthites to ace continually on the defensive. When time was called there was no score on either side and the match was thus drawn. The following team was picked to represent tbe district ; Humphries (full back), Hempton, A. Bajly, W. Bayly (threequarters), Pardy (quarter), Fred Bishop andC. Bayly (wings), Veale, Hine, J. Whitehead, J. Lye, McNiece, Frank Bishop, McCoy, and F. Dalziell (tor wards), P, Dalziell, Henderson, and W. Guerin (emergencies). This was Charles Lamb's rebuke to a man who by self-assertion pronounced himself devoid of any peculiarity,: 11 Wh-which hand do you b-b-blow your n-n-noae with ? " inquired Lamb. '• With my right hand, to be mre." " Ah," said Lamb, pensively, "that's your pe-pe-peculiarity I 1 b-b-blow mine with my handkerchief." The following good ene is attributed to GfcO. R. Traverß, the wit of Wall-street, now dj-ing in the Bermudas : " I came down to Florida to get a little change and some rest." " Did you get it," someone asked. "No; the waiters got the little change and the hotels got the rest."
