Captain Edwin telegraphed at 1.45 p.m. to-day :—": — " Indications that glass will further riae, and ftjost to-night." A woman was charged at the Police Oourt this morning, before 0. E. Rawson, Esq., R.M., with drunkenness, and was muloted in the customary fine of 5s and costs. The Volunteer Band give a concert in the Recreation Grounds on the Queen's Birthday. The s.a. Gairloch steamed out of Waitara at 8 o'clock this morning for Onehungn. We understand that there is a movement on foot in St. Mary's Church to have the organ removed from the gallery to the body of the church, close to the vestry. The arrangements are being made by a special committee appointed for the work. The first of a Beries of experimental shipments' of fresh butter to tropical markets, is being made by to-morrow's (Sunday) mail steamer to Honolulu.' The packers are Messrs. N. King and F; P Corkill. We have to congratulate the firm upon the enterprise they are displaying in endeavouring to open.- a foreign market for the'principal Btaple~of industry iv this district. A fresh attempt is boing made to.utiliee the ironsand whioh is ho abundant on, our coastline - (says the Auckland Bell), and which would prove so vast a source of national wealth if it could only be reduced at a renuraerative cost, and so be brought within the range of practical commercial enterprise. A company has been started at Taran,aki, and oh Monday, the 9th May, work was commenced at the Henui Ironsand Wdrks under the supervision of Mr. Hipkins. The Bell further adds : •' We wish him every buccess, and advise him, if he would avoid certain failure, to steer clear of amateur smiths, who pretend to exceptional metallurgical science, and who, by their matchless impudence, aided by a fluont Cheap Jack gift of tho gab, have imposed themselves as experts on the artless Now Plytnouthians, and have hitherto succeeded in sinking every company that has started." Work is going on steadily at the ironsand works. Mr. Hipkins states that the trial will probably be made in a fortnight from date. A fresh supply of firebricks has been brought down from Auckland. Tin contractor for the charcoal has put a largo quantity of wood,on the ground and intends commencing burning on Monday. The success of the smelting of the ironBand will undoubtedly prove of the greatest benefit to Tarnnakj.
