OAKURA.

[from our own correspondent.]

May 17. — Our district was greatly startled on Saturday morning by the news that a lady and gentleman of the district hid committed suicide by hanging themselves. Myself like thb rest of the settlers hurried towards the place of the tragedy, when, lo and behold ! we found it was only two effigies bung on two poles in the township, one representing a man, the other » woman. They were hung close to the main road, so that every passerby could see them as they came to town.

In the evening there was an alarm of fire, and a good blaze illuminated the darkness. All thought to go and render assistance, but it was soon made known that it was only the effigies being burned. These things make it a little lively in the' township, and I have no doubt are very amusing to some of the larrikins.

There must be something wrong here, for lately I have noticed the police about. Such ÜBed never to be the case. We were a very quiet district at one time, but things have changed. It is to be hoped it will quieten down again in a little time. I think our County Council is on the right track for economising — this time in the contract for stone about Setts' hill, near Okato. If they let more of their work in that way we shall expect to have the rates lowered.

I trust oar Chairman of the Road Board will let the ratepayers know where their office is, and where the Board will hold Ub meetings, It ought to be in some public place, so that the ratepayers can inspect the books or attend the meeting, without going to a private house, which I beliove ia done at the present time. This is not legal.

The success of the smelting of the ironsand will undoubtedly prove of the greatest benefit to Taranaki. Holloway's Ointment and Pills.— Diseases of the Bowels. — A remedy, which has been tested and proved in a thousand different ways, capable of eradicating poisonous taints from ulcers and healing them up, merits a trial of its capacity for extracting the internal corruptions from the bowels.
