Alfred McCarthy — -arising out of the recent volunteer troubles came before the Police Court yesterday, and was dismissed owing to Colonel Lypn refusing to produoe -the original letter which contained the' alleged libel. Considerable ' consternation was caused in Onehunga on Saturday by a report gaining ourrenoy that a young lady named Miss Louisa Annie Olinkard (sister of Mrs. Glenny, wife of the Onehunga station-master) . had mysteriously disappeared. It appears that Miss Olinkard, who resides in the Kaukapakapa ' (Kaipara-) ■■ district, has . been staying with her sister at Onehunga during" the past fortnight, but intended to return home with her mother on Friday. During the course of Friday evening, however, Mr. Glenny discovered a note, which had evidently been left by Miss Glinkard, as it wbb in her handwriting, to the effect that she was unable to return home and face some troubles into which she had fallen, and that she intended to return her body '? to the. Lord who gave it." Mr. Gl«nny was naturally alarmed at the> tenor of the. letter, at once oommanioated witfrthe police. A searoh for the mißsing girl was quickly made,' but up to yesterday had not been found. She was found yesterday, having wandered to Auokland whilst in a despondent state. NORTHERN MAOBI ELECTION. The declaration of the .poll for the Northern Maori eleotion took plaoe at Wangarei on Monday, when Wiremu Katene was declared elected by three votes o?er Sydney Taiwhanga. The latter immediately protected on three grounds, namely, bribery, illegal voting, and votes taken at places whioh were not gazetted as polling places. • FIRE AT ISLAND BAY, "Wedlington, May 18. The residence of "W. B. Edwards, solicitor, Island Bay, was destroyed by fire yesterday. The building was insured for £1850 in the New Zealand office, reinsured for £675 in the South British, and reinsured for one-third each in the Colonial, National, and Strndard. NO PRISONERS TO BE RELEASED. The Government have decided there shall be no special remission of prisoners' sentences in celebration of the Queen's Jubilee. Large Nugget Found, Dunedin, May 18. A 78-ounce nogget has been found in one of the branches of the Shotover mine.
Mr. Joseph Ivcss relinquished the Timaru Herald on April 30th to his literary and litigious opponent, Mr. Kerr, of the South Canterbury Times, the other Timaru paper, and in his last number he gave himself a good send off, and a good lift to his proposed new evening paper. On tbe first page he had a full column advertisement of some printer's wares. On the second two good sized notices to his debtors '; a leading article of over a column describing how the Timaru Herald had been a financial failure ever since tbe land craze was . cured ; and four locals about his newspaper. On the third page -a two column advertisement, the prospeotus of his new venture ; and on the fourth, a three column big-letter invitation to look out for it when it appcaw - in July,
