THE AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION.
TO THE EDITOR. . Sir, —Tlaving for fifty years atten-ied cattle shows in the Home country and colony, I was disappointed on visiting the last two held in New Plymouth. Succesful shows are not only an indication oc the prosperity of a district, they are valuable for the information gained, and the union it tends to cement amongst all classes of. producers, and acts as an advertisement for Btud owners by exhibiting tho progeny. Tho desire of seeing such in Taranaki induced mo to make the offer I did (conditionally) to tho Association. Their decision proves they do not consult tho interretß of country settlers. The)' ask this district to contribute more to assist tho funds than the Society haa given in prizes for the past five shows held. Shows held heretofore at Bell Block, I am, informed, gavp general satisfaction. Tho secret was judicious management, assisted by an energetic secretary. I am not deBirous to add censure, nor detail the numerous complaints we hear on all sides; sufficient to state results prove a failure. Knowledge is 2}oiver, and excels ways and means if rightly applied. Associations of the kind, with due care, should prove selfsupporting.—l am, &c,
J. Sargent.
