Saturday, September 18.—Before 0. E. Rawson, R.M. ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. George Dobbie appeared under arrest charged that he did on the 16th September, 1886, at New Plymouth, unlawfully and knowingly by a certain false pretenceobtain of and from one Clement William Govett a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand for £45, the property of jone Joseph Cowan. > Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Duffin said that the prisoner was arrested on Friday evening on a warrant charging him with having received a cheque from Mr. Govett, solicitor, for the sum of (£(45,(£(45, representing that he was. a partner* with Joseph Cowan, which' Cowan denies. Prisoner cashed the cheque, and has paid part of the money away' for timber received by them, and had £18 11s. left. " Sergeant Duffin asked for a remand until next Friday. He expected Mr. Pardy back from Wellington by that time. Piisoner was accordingly remanded, bail being allowed, himself in £100, and two sureties at £50. Messrs, H. Julian and G. Clifl: became sureties, and the prisoner was released. The Court rose.

An in momoriatn service will be held in Queen-street Church to-morrow evening at 630 p.m., touching the death of Mr. W. Beale. The rainfall in town for the week ending to-day waa "84 of an inch. Light rain fell on six days. The Volunteer Band uniforms, which hive been manufactured by the New Zealand i Clothing Factory, came to hand this morning. There are twenty outfits in ' all! The uniform tunic is of scarlet Mosgiel cloth, braided with white, the trousers are dark blue with a red stripe, and the head gear is a dark blue helmet, with white metal facings and chin strap. The members of the band will probably make their first appearance in them at a church parade to-morrow week. Ths uniforms will be on view to-night ia the windows of the New Zealand Clothing Factories shop. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Cricfeet Club will be held ut tho Criterion Hotel at half-padt seven this evening. As the business is important, a full attendance is requested. Mr. G. Garry has received the appointment of organist at St. Mary's Church, vacated by Mr. A. Drew. An Open Lodge entertainment by the Egmont Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was given in the Freemasons' Hall oa Friday evening, and was fairly well attended. The Rev. Mr. Sadler presided, and gave a short address. The following was thepramme: —Overture, Miss Gilbert; song, Mr. Blanchett; recitation, Miss Gill; chorus, temperance choristers ; reading, Mr. "White ; songr, Miss Ho well; address, Mr.-Fickard; song, Mr. R. Gilbert; recitation; Aiiss Cook; song, Mrs. Sadler; chorus, temperance choristers; song, Miss Gill; recitation, Miss Ho well; chorus. The choruses were accompanied by Mr. Williams ('cello) and the Misses Williams and Mr. Arnold (violins). Mr. Williemß gave a Welsh song, which was enthusiastically received, and the encore was responded to by another song in the same tongue. Miss Drake, of the Inglowood school, waa tho recipient of a very pleasing presentation from the school children on Friiliiy. Miss Drake is about to relenquisli. her appointment, which she bus held for seven years, aud the children decided to take advantago of the occasion to give some tangible token of their attachment and respect. Tho presentation consisted of a plated tea urn, butter cooler, and knife, which wero purchased with money entirely the subscription of the pupils. The articles were presented by Miss Leech,' pupil teacher of tho Inglewood school, aud Miss Drake rnpliod in feeling terms. A number of ladies were present during thd ploasincr ceremony, the Chairman of the district School Committee presiding. The question of getting a railway station placed at Fitzroy was brought up at a public meeting on Thursday, when a petition setting forth the following facts was signed : —That thero are 40 houses in the township o£ Fitzroy, and there are several substantial villas in tho immediate neighborhood. That tho business aud occupations 06 most of tho residents lie in New Plymouth, two miles distant, nnd thero is consequently much trallic between tho two places. That although there ia a station at Smart Road, it is more than half a mile distant from the neurest point of Fitaroy, and it is little or no use either for tho passenger or goods trnllic of Filzroy. Persons about to build at Fitzroy find it less expensive to order their goods either from New Plymouth or Waitaro, and to havo them carted to Fitzroy than to have them taken by mil to Smart Hoiul station, which is ut least half a milo further from New Plymouth than Fitzroy itself. That a passenger station and a siding ior trucks or! coal and timber could be constructed with but little expense ut or neur Daruellstrcet. That the township and neighbourhood of Fitzroy are favorite places for residences, uud thero is every prospect of this district being an important suburb of New Plymouth.
