FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
Auckland, September 14. An old man named Michael King was knocked over by a railway waggon which was being shunted, and died a short time afterwards. ANOTHER FIRE AT COROMANDEL.
An unoccupied ten-roomed house at Coromandel, belonging to Charles King, Auokland, was destroyed by fire this morning. Insurances unknown. An inquiry will probably be held. CONTEST FOR THE MAYORALTY IN
WELLINGTON.
' Wellington, September 14. The present Mayor, Mr. A. W. Brown, has announced that he will not stand this year. Amongst the reasons he gives one is that it is freely rumoured that the Mayors of the colonial capitals will be knighted in the Jubilee year, and there are people who deserve that honor better than he does, and will be able to aosept the concomitant responsibilities and discharge the duties better than he could. INSURANCE ON FIRE IN BLENHEIM.
Blenheim, September 18. The insurances over all Pickering and Co.'s stores and buildings burnt on Friday are— £soo in the Equitable, £1000 in the National ; on the stock, £3500 in the National, £1000 in the Liverpool and Globe. Re-insured — The buildings, in the New Zealand, £1000 ; the stock, in the New Zealand, £1000, South British £1250, and Union £500. The building, which was partially destroyed, was the oldest wool-Btore in Marlborough.

KETCH ASHORE AT LE BON'S BAY,
Akaroa, September 13. The ketch Diligent, Phillip Meservey, master, went ashore at Le Bon'3 Bay on Friday. She is loaded wiih building material for Mr. W. Barnet. Neither vessel nor cargo ia insured. The crew are safe, and the vessel has not broken. The -wind is blowing quite a gale, and the sea breaking across the bay. The craft is ashore near the bar or the river. She is beiug discharged, and may be got off if the weather moderates.
FIXE AT OAVERSHAM.
Dr/NEDiN, September 18. A fire at OaVersham 'destroyed two houses belonging to Walter Goodall. Insured in the Colonial for £275.
FIRE, AT GORE.
Invercabgill, September 14. The Mandevillo Hotel, in tho Gore district, Vas burnt down ou Saturday morning. The building was insured for £6,000 in the New Zealand office, half being reinsured in the South British.

Two Salvationists pleaded guilty to a breach of the Gore procession bylaw, aud were fined*
