THE KIMBERLY GOLDFIELDS.
A LETTEB FROM CAMBRIDGE GULF.
Messrs Jakins and Wilcox, Produce Merchants, Cashel street, ChriVfhurch have receivod a letter fro n Cip am S3 nith, of the h.trq.ie Notero, which vessel arrived at U.irnhriJge Gulf ou July 30lh with a cargo of produce from AucklsuJ. The letter is dated Cambridge Gulf, July 3lßt, and Captain Smith states that he found the reports from tho gold fi Us were disoouraging ; that there was not sufficient gold there to warrant a rush. There are twelve stores at the Gulf, which are full. No cargoes are selling, and apparently there is no money. There is also a Customhouse, four hotels, three auctioarooms, a hospital, and about sixty tents. Customs duties aro excessive, and Captain Smith quotes us follows :— l2s per cent, on timber ; £1 per ton on flour ; 3d per lb on bacon and cheese ; lOa per ton on bran and potatoes; J2-J 61 on chaff; 4d per bushel on oata. The , thermometer registered 93 in the shade. About 300 men wero begging for passages to anywhere, having no meand whatever. The Noti-ro took a large number of pissengers from the Gulf to Firth, at which port Messrs Jakins and Wiluox have been advised she arrived on St-ptombi r 2ni.
