HON. Mil. BALLANCE AT PATEA. . . Patea, September 10. ( The Hon.- Mr. Ballauce arrived here last evening. A deputation from the Harbor Board waited on him at 10 o'clock this morning relative to 'a reduction of interest on the loan, and also about opening up the back country. He afterwards attended a meeting ot natives when grievances were discussed, and the natives were fully satisfied with 'Mr. Ballance's explanations.' There' was some discussion also which had reference to the Maori Kepresentative. The natives also expressed themselves in favor of abolishing the Maori member, and stated the only member they, wanted was Mr. Balltiuce, who came to talk with them face to face, and hear and alleviate their grievances. Mr.Ballauoe goes to Hasrera this evening. Mr. Eennell acted as interpreter.

FLOODS SUBSIDING.

Blenheim, September 10.

The floods are rapidly subsiding. Great damage has been done to the roads and footpaths. Large tracts of country are submerged, and the loss of stook is considerable. EARTHQUAKE AT WHAKAMARINA;

The earthquake on Friday last was severely felt at the Whakamarina diggings, where a claim was completely buried by a fall' of earth, Tbe occupants escaped unhurt.

CURIOUS FIRE.

One of F. H. Piokersgill and Oo.'s stores, coutaiuiug sulphur, lime, flour, aud uiiscellaueous goods, was partially decoyed aud gutted by fire labt night. The supposed cause is a flood ol water coming in contact with the lime. The estimated loss in stock is £000 ; damage to the building £200. The stock aud building are insured conjointly wifb. the remainder of Pickeregili's stores.
