WAIIII ROAD BOARD. [FROM" OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The. -first 'meeting of theWnihi Road Bonrd was held on September 9th, 1888, in the Clifton County Council office, Waitara, at 11 a.m. Present: Messrs. J. D. Baker, \\ . Black, J. Hine, and J. Rattenbury. — The clerk appointed by the Council presided, and read the eleption of member?, and called on them to elect a chairman for the Board. — It was proposed by Mr. Baker, and seconded by Mr. Hine. and carried, " That Sir. J. Rattenbury be the chairman- of the Waihi Road Board." — The Chairman ..stated .that the first thing to be done would bo to ask a committeo of tho Tikorangi Road Board to meet a committee of them re liabilities, &c. They might also appoint a clerk pro tern. — Mr. Black proposed, and Mr. lline seconded, and it was carried, " That Mr. G. Bertiand be appointed clerk to the Board pro tern". — It was resolved, " That tho clerk writo to tho Tikorangi Koad Board asking them to appoint a committee of: thoir Board to meet v cominUti-c o£ the Waihi Road Board ro liabilities, &c, and to appoint tiino and place." C'aniod. — It svas proposed by Air. lline, und sooonded by Mr. Black, " That this meeting stands adjourned until Thursday, Sept. '16, 1880, nt'2 p.m." Carried.— The Board rose. '

Forest lands aro to be divided under the new rogulatioos which haye been recently Gazetted into the following classes :— (1) Mountain reserves, comprising forests reserved for the protection of springs, streams, and rivers, or for other climatic reason?, irrespective' of altitude. In forests of this class timber shall be felled by special selection only, and not more than one-sixth of the area of v reserve shall bo fellel in any one season. (2") Forest reserves, including plantations, felling- shall bo by periodic selection or by rotation of Area, at tho discretion of the Chief Conservator. (3) Timber reserves mado. for preserving tho limber until it can be profitably converted when cleared, shall be considered waste lands of the Crown, unless specially pioclaimed under class 2. i It was made a feature in tho opposition to Mr. Vnilo's Behomo that it did not apply to goo Is traffic. The following occurs in ft long letter forwarded by Mr. Vailo to us and may bu taken us his challenge to tho Department upon this phfiso of his contention : — "As regards goods traffic, tho only reason 1 had for refusing to deal with this branch of the subject was this, that I knew tho department Would have mo at a disadvantage, as they published no returns on which I could base a calculation iv which tho figures would harmonise with those they could produce, and no one can doubt they would gladly have availed themselves of the opportunity of throwing discredit on the whole of my work.
