WIDENING A ROAD AT STRATFORD.

TO THE EDITOR. SlB. — I notice in your issue of the 2nd Inst, a remark from your Stratford correspondent re widening the road from the Stratford Hotel to Hare's store, says "The Town Board and the County Council had agreed to decide the cost of the work, but that some too officious individual has told the latter to-day, that the former had altered its mind," your correspondent is evidently gurmising tbat some busy-body has been at work, llaving myself made full enquiries into the facts, I would like to state for the information of your correspondent, and the ratepayers generally, who has been the cause of the work not having been done before. The Stratford Town Board applied to the County Council for assistance in making a footpath from the Patea Bridge (not from the hotel) to Bate's Btore. As the County Council do not make footpaths, the letter wag merely acknowledged ; but a resolution was carried authorising the Overseer to arrange with the Stratford Town Board to widen the road from ihe bridge to Hare's store, the cost not to exceed £15. The Overseer consequently saw the Chairman of the S. T.B. (.Mr. Chas. Curtis) and arranged that the board should call for tenders and complete the work. At a subsequent meeting of the Town Board, two members objected to spend any of tho Town Boaid funds in subsidising the grant from the County Council, on the ground that tho work to be done would only benefit Hare, therefore your correspondent will be able to see from this who the too officious individual was. In conclusion, I would ask my fellow ratepayers to remember these narrow-minded members at tho next election, as we do not want such men to govern the expenditure of our rates. — I am, &c, Progress. Stratford, July G, 1886. P.S.— Having applied to head-quarters for the above information, I can vouch for its accuracy.
