PARLIAMENTARY.
GOVERNMENT PASSING THEIR MEASURES. TunnsDAY, July B.— The business of the House last night consisted of debates on the second reading; oE the Hospital and Charitable Aid Bill and the Civil Service Reform Bill. Both measures were opposed, but in the end the Government carried the second reading; the first on the voices, and the latter by a majority of twenty. PROGRESS OF BUSINESS. Ministers are very pleased with the amount of work got through last week and this, but as no important debate has yet taken place and will not until Public Works Statement ia reached it is impossible to form an idea as to the probable prorogation date. Many hon. members, in view of the large amount of work passed through Committee during the last few days, confidently anticipate tho close of the session by tho end of this month. PROTECTION. The protection question is to be again raised in the Legislative Council to-morrow (Friday) by Mr. Chamberlain, who will then move, "That in the opinion of this Council it is of tho very utmost importance to tho permanent prosperity of the colon} of New Zealand that every encouragement should be given to manufacturing industuries by the imposition of protGotivb duties." NOMINATES" IMMIGRANTS. From a return laid on the table of the House it shows that during the period from Ist June, 1885, to 30th April, 1886, 713 immigrants were nominated for New Zealand and 545 arrived. Their distribution was as follows: — Auckland, 161; Taranaki, 27; Hawke's Bay, 23; Wellingj ton, 137; Marlborough, 1; Nelson, 10; Westland,l9; Canterbury, 84; Otago, 83. The total number of assisted immigrants from the commencement of the scheme to date has been 112,493 persons. ILLNESS OF SIR JULIUS YOGEL. Sir Julius Yogel has been suffering from a severe indisposition, and on Saturday and Sunday was confined to his bed. The latest bulletin reports him 6omewhat better, but he cannot yet go down to the House.
