MRS. E. BRAMLEY'S NEW RESIDENCE AT HENUI.
Mrs. E. Bramley, who -lately purchased tho property at-H-enui known as Hamblyn's estate^has 'just' had a .large residence erected,, which, although not one of the largest ia the district,- .is certainly one of; theib.est finisjiedj. At, the' request of the builder we recently" paid the place a : visit, and., are-- enabled ?to give the following^ particulars: — .'-The, house*' is. .of .!one -"storey, and is >T-shaped, with a-tmy. window in, the projecting part "in""" front, , and a verandah running aTbng~'-tha "resfc^of- the face and round the side? — The floor of the verandah is'of concreteyand is approached'by three concrete' steps, which are barrted along its whole length. -K@bncfeteis also used in the •^foundations of the house. At each of the slender verandah 'posts of turned puriri a square hole has been left in the second step, as a receptacle for flower pots. The chimneys ..are. . finely moulded, and the painting of tHe house and'the other external work display the same finish. The paint is sanded, in two sqadeß, and is an excellent imitation, ofcatone. Wilson's hydraulic j lime, in' Auckland, production, has been Used for coating the concrete face of the foundation where it is not hidden by Ihe steps. The main front -entrance opens into a lofty- hall, -17ft, -by §ft. Gin.,- which is panelled throughout with kauri and'.rimu. Tho boarding is of kauri, -and the narrow panels rimu, and^he contrast of tho two shades is very, pleasing. The fanlight and .the. side lights" around life, door are ornamented with patent Glacier decorations, the patterns 6piiig coloured historical figures. - Thd halHshung with a soft light globe. . •'--.. On the right the hall opens into the drawing-room, thb room ia which is the bay window seen from the road, and' on the left into the~ J &ra'wing-roorn, which is 20ft. by 15ffc^--Thd-dining-room is lighted' with^three French' casement windows opening to the verandah." A Kauri and rimu panelled d'adtPruns around this room, .'aird- the ceiling also ia of the same work, the oqly diflierence'being that the panelling of the dado is in large squares, and that ot , the . • ceiling is narrow , strips The kitchen is fitted up' with with a •Trafford range, and is replete with every Gulinaiy requisite.'" There is also at the back a large scullery,. fitted, with a oopper set in a concrete furnace? The' bathroom is rather larger than is usual, and the water supply of the baths and of the rest of the bouse ia from tanksj which are placed in a' sufficiently elevated position to give a' pressure to all parts of the building. 1 The bedrobms'-have had as muoh attention paid to fittings as the other parts of the house, and are furnished. with cabinet work wardrobes and otlier conveniences. There are uine.rooms.ia, all, and the contractor has been^. engage.d- three months in the building operations. The architecf-.bf the work is Mr. Sanderson, and he really deserves great credit for the taste arid-richness which his design displays. Mr. Sorrdnson is the contractor. We understand that this is one of the first contracts Mr. Sorrensen has undertaken in New Plymouth- Even if the evidence of • one's eyes was -not to be accepted, the •satisfaction which his work has given the; architect and Mre. Bramley would be suffi-' cient testimony as to a'faiEhful compliance, with all the' conditions. The painting and .guilding reflect not a little credit on Mr." Walsh, to whom this work was entrusted. The bricklaying and concrete work was done by Mr. Hooker, whose' employe, Mr. Brooks has, according to Mr. Sanderson, proved himself a very expert tradesman. The grounds in which the house 3tands are Borne six or seven acres in extent, and are capable of being made very pretty. The keys are to be handed over by the contractor in the course of a week, when Mrs.- Bramley will' commence to remove l into her new domicile, which is alike a credit to herself "ahd the district.
