MANAIA.

[FROM A CORUESrONDEMT. I March 19. — Tho monument is at last finished, mid reflects much credit ou Messrs. Twigpr and Co., the contractors, for tho workmanlike stylo in which they havo erected it. It is placed in tho centre of the Octagon, and on one side benrii the following inscription: — "This monument to tho memory of tho officers and men of the Armed Constabulary aud of the Patea Field Force who wero killed dui-iug tiie operations in Patea and at N^atapa, in year 1863-9, is erected by officers anl men of tho A.C Field Force." The other sides are taken up with the names of the officers and men and the names of tho pahs where tho engagements took place. The Town Board have decided to have the unveiliug on Eisler Monday, aud it i 3 hoped that cheap " return tickets will bo issued from New Plymouth to Normanby for that date. For this purpose tho train could leave earlier than usual and stut later from Normanby, where conveyances will tako them lo and from Manaia. There will be plenty of amusement for tho visitors after tho unveilimr, a good progiamme of athletic sports having to ta ! xe place on ths same date, at which somo of the best athletes on ths coast will take part. It can only bfc expected that a 1-u-ge concourse of people will bo present to do honor to the n.emory of tho&o brave end gallant officeis and men who fell during tho war; li^litin.c as thoy did against (.insurmountable difficulties, and in a way that only brave and t.rua men canfgiviny; up their homes aud families, and most of all their lives, lo die fighting for them and their country. Then let it be shown thai th'jy are not forgotten, but live in memory ' dear to a country that will ever remember } their noble deed?.
