NISWS^KOM NEW IIEBKIDES. Auckland October 7. Arrived — Southern Gross, from New Hebrides. Sinoe the Southern Cross was last hero, she has been eugageil on several special trips out of Fiji, tho last being for the purpose of returning 121 Polynesian laborers. This was effected without any serious-trouble at Santa. Anna McDonald and family, who aro the only white people on the lslaud, complained that the natives have been very troublesome of late, having murdered a nativo behind their private residence on the day before the Southern Gross called, and had also threatened to murder McDonald and family. The Southern Gross has about half a dozen natives on board, yet, one of them being a return laborer, who refused to land, for fear he should be killed and eateu, so very unpleasant were his recollections of the behavour of the natives where he was to have beeu put ashore. ■ ARRIVAL OFFRBNCH CORVETTE MAGON, The French corvette Magou has arrived from Hobart. Sbe was one of those sent to reinforce the French during the recent Franco- Chinese war, but arrived on the scene after the treaty of peace was ' concluded, and, was^ therefore, ordered to the Facifio station. GOVERNOR LEFT FOR WAXGANUI. Wellington, October 7. The Governor, accompanied by his Private Seoretary, left for Wanganui overland yesterday morning. LUMPERS' STRIKE BROKEN UP. The lumpers' striko has thoroughly broken up, and they have resumed work at previous rates of wages.
