FIRE AT INGLEWOOD.

LATER PARTICDLARS. •

[telegraphed by our correspondent.] Our Inglewood correspondent telegraphs — " A large fire occurred in- this township this morning, when Mr. Chew Chong's premises and warehouso were entirely destroyed by fire. The origin is unknown. It occurred at between 4 and 5 o'clock this morning, and was discovered by Mr. Priest, the manager, through the restlessness of the dog. Mr. Priest's wife and family I hear are in New Plymouth, and Mr. Chew Chong is in Wellington. The premises wero all burnt to the ground, including the warehouse, within an hour. Nothing was saved. The fire broke out in the drapery department, and Mr. Priest had only time to escape partially clothed." Mr. Pugh has just returned from south, where he has been to select his new season's ■tock of tweeds. He has been fortunate in getting unusually good samples of ■uitingfl, which aro well worthy of inspection. The Recreation Grounds Board intend to try to arrange with the Auckland band, which is visiting New Plymouth, to give an open air concert in the Recreation Grounds. A charge will be made for admission, and the terms on which the services of the band will be sought to be procured will be half the gate money. A minister of one of tho smaller churches in Auckland, to which he was going on a recent Sunday, saw a number of city Arabs, two of whom were desecrating the Sabbath by indulging in a game of " pitch and tosß." He walked quietly up to them, laid his hand on tho shoulder of one of the players, and said : " My boy, do you know what day this is ?" Receiving no reply, he put his hand on the shoulder of the other player and asked him thesamo question. Tho little rascal did not make any answer to the minister, but tfirncd to his companions, and said: ," I say, boy«, hore's a go. The old buster has been out on the sprco all night, and don't know wlmt dny it is." Tho poor minister was so surprised and shocked that ho did not know what to say, so walked on to chinch, where he preached, instead of the discourse he had prepared, a sermon on juvenile depravity. A dead trout, 20 inches in length and 12 inches in girth at the thickest part of the bod}', was found by Mr. J.B. Lawson in tho Recreation Grounds Pond on Sunday. It had no wounds to account for its death, and did not appear to have been at all unhealthy. It was of rather a light color, and beautifully speckled, and reminded Mr. Lawson very much of the famous Loch Leven tiout of Scotland. At v meeting of the Recreation Grounds Board on Friday, an offer from Mr. Mitohinson to donate a largo qunntity of evergreen trees and a piircel of valuable acquatic plants waa received. Mr. Mitchinson also offered to plant the latter. The offer was accepted with thanka ( and £5 was voted towards planting tho .other trees offered by Mr. Mitchinson. A vote of thanks was also passed to Cuptuin Messenger for his presentation of eevoral Jjandred young Pphutukawa trfeea,

Mr. A. C. F,pokeß is understood to be a candidate for the representation of the East Ward in the Borough Gouncil. Some lively scenes aro anticipated at Mr Courtney's meeting at Stratford on Thursday next, as several of tho recent arrivals talk of giving a new version of their colonial experiences. Two accidents happened on Saturday. An employo of the Harbor Board named Bell fell from his horse on tho South Road and broke his arm, and Mr. Barm settler at Panobu lost his eye by tho sudden uncoiling of some f enciug wire which ho was erecting. Mr. Barr has been removed to the hospital. It has -just been decided at Homo in the caso of the Queen v. the Mayor, etc., of Wigan, that when a Town Councillor has once sent in his unqualified resignation he cannot withdraw it, but the Returning Officer must at once proceed to an election. Mr. Corkill is in a very good way of collecting material for a work on tho trials and vicissitudes of an Assignee. The latest phase of this official's duty is to appear before the Police Court at Hawera on Monday, to answer the charge " that he did unlawfully allow liquor to be consumed on his premises by Mark Trott, Robert Creighton, Robert Hamilton, and William Cleggie during tho time at which licensed premises are directed to be closed — viz., between tbe hours of 11 o'clock on the night of Saturday and six o'clock on. the morning of Monday."
