MAILS DELIVERED. London, December 8. The homeward mails, via Sicily and Brindisi, dated Melbourne, Ostober 25, were delivered yesterday. FROZEN MEAT. A portion of the cargo of frozen mutton ex Lusitauia was sold to-day at the average price of 5^ per Ib. The meat is iv good condition. BRITISH AND TURKISH FLEETS. The British Government have agreed to preserve the Turkish frigates in the Red Sea, where they have been ordered to rendezvous by the Porte, provided the Turkish squadron are ordered to co-operate with the British war vessels now cruising off the eastern coast of
SPEAKERSIIIP OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. London, Decomber 9. It has transpired that Arthur W. Peel, Liberal member for Warwick, aud representative since 1867 for that constituency in the House of Commons, has expressed a willingness to be nominated for the Speaker's chair, vacant by the resignation of Sir H. B. W. Brand.
PRINCE FREDERIC WILLIAM. Madrid, December 8. Prince Frederic William, the German Crown Prince, who is now on a visit to King Alfonso, will return to Berlin via Rome, and will there pay a visit to His Holiness Pope Leo XIII. THE TONQUIN DIFFICULTY. Paris, December 8. The parleying which for some time past has been proceeding between Marquis Tseng and M. Ferry, with regard to the Tonquin difficulty, is still proceeding, but nothing, however, is definitely known regarding the progress which has been made with the negotiations.

O'DONNELL. Washington, December 8. A deputation of members of the United States Congress have petitioned President Arthur to obtain from the British Government a respite for
O'Donnell, who was convicted of the murder of James Carey, and upon whom the sentence of death waa passed on the Ist instant. KEPULSE OF EGYPTIAN TROOPS. Gaibo, December 9. Despatches to hand from Souakim, dated the oth instant, state that an attack in force was made on that date by the Arab hillmen upon the Egyptian tooops who had been despatched as reinforcements for the garrison at Souakim. The attack was made some distance outside the town, and resulted in the destruction of five companies of the Egyptian troops.
