ASSAULTING AN EDITOB.
Auckland, October 12. Mr. J. D. Wickham, newspaper proprietor, and editor of the Free Lance, was assaulted by Dr. Harrison, agent for Mrs. Dr. Potts. Mr. Wickham was in his office, when Dr. Harrison called him out, and after a short conversation demanded the writer of a letter in the paper signed "Figaro." Mr. Wickham declined to furnish the information. Dr. Harrison told him to take off his coat. Mr. Wickham explained he had no desire to make a blackguard of himself, when suddenly he was dealt a heavy -ij&w in the face. He gave Dr. Hamsofi into custody. Two other, Messrs. Aspinall and Miller, were locked up with Harrison, it being alleged they held Wickham while Harrison assaulted him. GRAHAM'S BODY FOUND. The body of Thomas Graham, drowned at Dargaville from the steamer Durham, has been recovered. It ap« pears he was in liquor at the time. An open verdict was returned. TERAWHITI GOLD MINE. Wellington, October 11. The Albion Mining Company, at Terawhiti, which has been crushing since the Golden Grown stopped, cleaved up on Monday. The amount of stone put through was three hundred aud thirty tons, resulting as folfows : — Thirty and a-half ounces amalgam and ten aud three-quarters ozs. of retorted gold. Mr. Battery, the manager, suggests that the Company should start a low level tunnel, as he is of opinion that belter gold exists than has been struck at present. The Directors have decided to take out 50 tons quartz from the low tunnel as a trial crushing. GOAOH ACCIDENT. Wellington, October 12. A coach accident occurred at ono o'clock this morniug. A party of ladies and gentlemen, numberimg about 20, returning from a dance at Karori reached as far as the Botanical Gardens safely when the trace broke, and, the horses becoming restive, the coach wont over the bank. Most of the passengers received injuries of a slight nature, but none serious. The party walked home. SUPPOSED DISOOVBRY OF A GOLD FIKLD. CinusTCHUßcii, October 11. At tho Laud Board, several parties applied /or licenses to prospect tor gold, aud one applied for a lease. The last informed the Board that he had discovered a gold bearing reef. All the applications were deferred, pending the return of Mr. Baker, Chief Surveyor, who had gone to the head of the liakaiii, where it is stated tha reef, bearing gold in payable quantities, has been discovered. MAN RUN OVBB BY A BALLAST WAGON Timaku, October 12. A man named A. Sutherland met with a serious accident on Fairlie Creek Railway line. He was working in a gravel pit, aud stepping back to avoid some of it falling on him got in frout of some advancing ballast wagons, two of which went over his right leg. He was immediately conveyed to the hospital, and on examination it was fouud his leg was injured so much as render amputation necessary. TENDER FOB BKEAKWATEB. Dunedin, October 12. The Harbour Board has accepted Messrs. Jones and Peters' tender of £22,582 for tho next section of breakwater. ARBIVAL OF EXPRES3 SrEAMEB TAKA»'UNA. Bluff, October 12. The Union Co.'s express steamer Takapuna from Glasgow, via Hobart, passed through the Straits this morniug.
