EAST WARD ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR

Sir,— ln this morning's News is a letter signed "A Believer in Christianity aad Temperance" which seems to be quite too awfully good to be genuine. Believing it to be as insincere a war-cry as was an ill-adviaed advertisement put in by the temperance party during tho last Borough election, I think it necessary to warn_ ratepayers against mistaking the question as one between teetotallers and publicans. Knowing well tho leading temperance men here I am able to say with an approach to certainty, that from the commencement of the present contest they resolved to leave this papor war to the Dorough Councillors, the candidates, and tho Jockey Club and their friends ; and this resolution they have kept. Of course I expect that most teetotallers will vote with those whose cry is : " The Reserve for the improvement of the Town and Streets," while the Publicans will doubtless support the Jockey Club. But no one will question the right of either of these parties to vote as they think proper, nor will any intelligent man be restrained from exercising his vote simply because Teetotallers and Publicans are, as usual in politics, on opposite sides. I hoped to have been able to keep out of this discussion, and would not have written now but that some Temperance friends think that I on their behalf should disavow the letter above mentioned. — I am, &c, Robert C. Hughes.
