MELBOURNE CUP.

[reuter's copyright telegrams.] The following scratchings for the Melbourne Cup were posted on Tuesday :—: — Lebcau, Maid of the Hills, and Doncaster.

In our remarks on the statistics of Friendly Societies in Monday's issue, it was stated that the number of the members of the Ancient Order of Foresters was 62 ; it should have been 262. The Electric Circus has arrived, and will be opened this evening. The special train from Waitara, which was announced for to-night, will not run, but to-morrow and on Friday one will be put on and will pick up passengers at the various stations. The Circus Company and paraphernalia arrived in New Plymouth by special train at three o'clock. We hear that a steamer is likely to leave Auckland for Mokau with a party of gentlemen on board representing capital, and that the object of their visit is to make arrangements for coal mining, lime stone quarrying, and timber cutting on the land leased by Mr. Joshua Jones from the natives. The G. S. Hinemoa arrived in the roadstead yesterday evening about six o'clock, and anchored here for several hours awaiting the arrival of the Native Minister, from Wanganui, Mr. Bryce arrived by train at 7 p.m., and went on board tho Hinemoa at 11 p.m. Tho steamer shortly afterwards sailed for Kawhia. We learn that there were about 120 of the A.C. Force on board the Uinemoa, under the command of Major Tuke. Mr. Joshua Jones called at our office yesterday, and informed us that certain Europeans have been at Mokau endeavouring to influence the natives against him> but they have beon told by Wahanui, Te Wetcre, find other chiefs to keep away, as they do not wish any trouble caused there like there is at Kawhia ; and have written to the Government on tho matter. The Government has replied to the natives, as well as to the lessees of the land at Mokau, that the Ministry see no grounds for interfering with his lease. The Legion of Honor.—ln addition to the award of the Gold Medal (L'Academic Nationale), and also the Silver Medal, awarded to John Briusmead ie Sons, of Wigmore-street, London, for the superiority of tho Piano exhibited by them last year at the Pariß Exhibition, the founder of the firm has been created Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, thii dutinction being conferred Oi no other Britiih Pianoforte MtnulMturet
