A meeting of the Committee of the Amalgamated Societies' Picnic will be held in the Bridge Club-room this evening, at 7.30. The performing members of the Heywood All Star Novelty Company are expected by steamer on Wednesday, and will open at the new hall on Friday. A full practice of the chorus and orchestra for " Elijah," by the members of the Philharmonic Society, will take place in the Alexandra Hall this evening. We learn from a gentleman who returned from Mokau on Friday, that there is no truth in the .statement published in the Hawera Slur, to the effect that 40 men of the A.G. Force have been stationed at Mokau. Another convenience for traveller is fast coming into use. Little books, elegantly got up and odoriferous, arc sold containing what are termed " soap sheets." Each loaf in the book, is. sufficient tq- wash the hands uad face. A traveller can thus carry a month's supply oi! soap in a very small compass/ . . Six gentlemen arrived by the s.s. Macgregor yesterday, from Auckland, to assist in the performance of " Elijah." Their namo are Messrs. Edgar^Hemus'(2), McKenzie, Prime ; and also Mr. Richmond) from Nelson. The first fivo gentlemen are instrumentalists, and will materially strengthen the orchestra ; and the latter gentleman, who has an excellent tenor, voice, will render good service in the choruses. Several other amateurs are expected from Auckland, and also from Patea and Hawora,
