ATTEMPTED INCENDIARISM. Auckland, August 80. A case of attempted incendiarism has occurred at Newton East Publio School. At two o'clock this morning the fire broke out near the gas meter, which was found turned on, but the fire was suppressed after going up the lining of two class rooms and melting the gas connection. SUSPICION OF POISONING. Auckland, August 81. Sarah Johnstone, who was recently committed for trial for concealment of birth at Cambridge, but who was out on bail, died at Auckland on Monday, being married on her death-bed to a man named Cleaver, with whom she had been acquainted at Cambridge. Before the burial of the body yesterday, a post-mortem examination was held, as the doctors were puzzled with the symptoms preceding death. It is rumoured that an examination revealed the presence of arsenic in her stomaoh. Deceased had only arrived in Auckland on Monday week, to be married to the man Cleaver, and had staved at Mrs. Butler's, a friend of Cleaver's mother, as three days' residence was required before the marriage could be solemnised. In the middle of the night Mrs. Butler, in whose bed Miss Johnstone slept, was awoke by her getting up to vomit. Dr. Bichardson was subsequently sent for, and, as the girl got worse, it was decided to call in Das. Walker and Purchas, but sb*" 1 'uccumbed as above on Monday. ENGLISH VESSEL ARRIVED. Wellington, August 81. Norman McLeod (barque), 95 days from London, has arrived. LATE FIRE. Christchuroh, August 30. The insurances on Somerset Hotel are — Norwich Union, £1000 ; Liverpool and London, £500. Nothing further is yet known, but the excitement and alarm are greater than ever. BINNEY'ri GAS MACHINE. Dunedin, August 29. A letter has been received from Melbourne stating, with regard to Biuney's gas machine, that the railway authorities had the machiue erected at a railway station for a practical trial, with a view to the adoption of the new process on the Victorian railways, and that the directors of the Melbourne Metropolitan Gas Company, after inspecting the machine, are arranging to test the apparatus, with the intention of treating for the right to use the process. CHARGE OF AHSON. McGill, draper, of the Arcade, was committed for trial foralioinpted arson. His defence was reserved.
