The s.s. Penguin crossed the Manukau bar at 10.40 a.m. to-day, is due in the roadstead early to-morrow, and sails for Nelson at 10.30 a.m. During the sitting of the Police Court yesterday, a case of pig stealing preferred against a Maori by Mr. Ralph was called on. Mr. Samuel, who appeared for the complainant, stated that the evidence of certain natives, which was essential to procure conviction, was not forthcoming, and the prosecutor therefore wished to withdraw the charge. The Maoris had themselves suffered considerably through having their pigs stolen, and that was also another reason for not pressing the charge. His Worship remarked it was a pity the defendant should have been arrested, and ordered that he be discharged from custody. Two other charges of a similar nature fixed for hearing at a future date were also withdrawn. A meeting was held last evening at the Court-room for the purpose of discussing the advisability of forming a clnb and debating Bociety. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and briefly introduced the objoct of the meeting by saying that he considered a debating society would be productive of good, and it was very desirable that a club should be formed. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. W. Humphries, seconded by Mr. Snell, <( That it is desirable to form a club to be called the Union Club and Debating Society." The following provisional committee was elected to make enquiries as to the prospects of the Society, aid to report at a future meeting :—: — Messrs. W. Bayly, W. Humphries, Snell, J. C. Davies, F. W. Revell, A. Boswell, W. H. Newman, Dockerill, and J. G. Pannoll, hon. see.
