EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board met on Monday. Present: Yen. Archdeacon Govett (chairman), Messrs. Andrews, Faull, J. Kelly, Lawrence, Syme, Veale, and Wade. Architect's Report — The report by the Architect was read, which stated that the teacher's residence at Okato was ready for occupation ; the residence at Opunake was in progress; the rooms at Fitzroy had been furnished with desks, and would be ready for occupation by Ist September. Progress Payment. — The Board passed a progress payment of £125 on account of a contract at Okato. Kent Road School — The Board decided to send fourteen dual desks from the High School to the Kent Road Sohool, and that new desks be made for the High School. No. 3 Committee. — A communication waa received from No. 3 School Committee recommending to the Board that Miss St. George, assistant teacher at Miss Shaw's school, take charge of Mrs. Hogarth's school during her illness ; and that Miss Ellis be relieved as soon as possible from the temporary charge of Mrs. Hogarth's school. — The Board sanctioned these arrangements. — The Committee also asked to be supplied with certain information with regard to building fund — It was resolved, " That all the information required by No. 3 School Committee in their letter of 22nd August be furnished with the exception of that relating to the High School, which is entirely under the jurisdiction of the Board." — It was decided that the necessary arrangements be made for supplying Miss St. George's place. Central Boy's School. — A letter was received from the Government, stating that they could not make a special grant for a Central Boy's School at New Plymouth. Pukearuhe. — A letter was read from Captain Messenger, requesting that a female teacher be sent to the Pukearuhe District. He also reported that Constables Wyatt and Sparkes had acted as masters during the last quarter. — The Board decided to grant Constables Wyatt and Sparkes the capitation allowance for the quarter. — The Board appointed Miss Tatton teacher to the school on probation, at a salary of £40 with a capitation allowance, subject to passing preliminary examination. — The Secretary was instructed to write to No. 3 Committee, asking them to take steps to supply Miss Tatton's place in town. Examination. — The Inspector reported I that two teachers had failed to pass their preliminary examination. High School. — It was resolved that a statement of accounts in connection with the High School be made out and laid before the next meeting of the Board. — A letter was read from Mr. Toms, second master of tho High School, asking the Board to reconsider their decision respecting his application for an increase of salary, j — The Board deferred the consideration of the letter until the next meeting. j Midhirst. — It was resolved to erect a two-roomed cottage at Midhirst, at a cost not exceeding £60. Upper Mangorei. — A letter was read from the Chairman of No. 4 District, requesting the Board to grant a sum of £3 for forming and gravelling the path from the road to the school door at Upper Mangorei, as during the late wet weather the school-ground had been a regular mud-pool. — The application was granted. Tatarahnaha District. — On the motion of Mr. Vkalk, seconded by Mr. Sitme, it was resolved, " That two rooms be added to the teacher's residence at Tataraimaka." Cleaning Wells. — It was resolved, " That the Chairman of all the school districts be communicated with, pointing out the necessity of the wells or tanks being cleaned — tho tanks every six months and the wells annually." Requisitio7i. — A requisition for books, etc., for the Upper Mangorei School, was granted. Accounts. — Accounts amounting to £126 11s. were passed for payment. This concluded the business.
