HORSEWHIPPING her HUSBAND.

For some time past a man named Howie has resided in Newton Road, Newton, with bis wife and family. He is unfortunately addicted to intemperance, and when in liquor not unfrequently converts his usually peaceful • house into a perfect pandemonium. 1 The wife had been maltreated on more ■ than one occassion, while numerous < " striking " proofs of affection had been administered to the children by their bibulous father. The dames of that portion of Newton made Mrs Howie's domestic grievances the subject of many post-prandial chats over 1 back fences and at last it was decided ' that something should be done on her ■ behalf. On Monday last, Mr. H. came ' home drunk enough to wind up his • watch with the hair brush, and as full : of fight as a Zulu warrior. Mrs. > Howie, metaphorically speaking, sent . forth the " fiery cross," and in a very brief space of time three muscular specimens of Newton femininity put in an appearance. Order of battle was . formed, and in less time than is taken up by this description, the enemy was attacked front and rear, whiskers, hair, arms, and legs, seized hold of, and the unfortunate Howie wus thrown on his bed and securely bound. A : horsewhip was produced, and the ladies proceeded to belabour him soundly on the back and shoulders, utterly oblivious of his entreaties and execrations. This practical lesson does not appear to have had much effect, as the man was arrested for , being drunk and disorderly yesterday. He was to-day charged at the Polise Court with the offeuce and mulcted in a penalty of 20s. and costs. — Auckland Star.
