OPUNAKE.

[TELEGRAPHED BY OUR CORRESPONDENT.] June 9. — A branch of the Union Bank of Australasia was opened here this morning. Mr Laishley, the manager at Hawera, and Mr. Gordon, the new aeent here, came upby coach last evening, and rather astonished the folks by bringins up a safe and other things. For the present they open in Courtney's bnildinsr. The bank has purchased two new shops lately built, nearly opposite Middleton's Hotel, from Mr. Prosser, livery stables-keeper, Hawera. The elections for the Town Board took place yesterday. The following are the results : — Newman. 36 ; Pettisrrew, 35 ; Anderson, 32 ; Middleton. 31 : Smith. 30 ; M. F. Coffey. 22 : John Ooffev, 18 ; Cross, 14 ; Ritson. 12. The first five were elected. The first meetiner will take place on Monday next in the drill shed. The evening before the, election moßt of th» candidates addressed the ratepayers at the drill shed. The bnrniner questions appeared to be the pound and handing over the drill shed site to volunteers. Some volunteers think that the site ought to be piven to them unconditionally if it is in the power of the Town Board to do ro. Some ratepayers think that it ought to be leased to the volunteers at a mere nominal rent, say, a shilling a year, but that the Town Board ought not to part with the entire control of the site which was set apart as a municipal reserve. I hear the Opunake Variety Company are going to give an entertainment. The proceeds to be given to the young man •who met with a gun accident some time ago. ________«__
