LATE FIRE IN WELLINGTON.

Wellington, January 0. An inquest was held to-day into th< origin of the recent fire in Hunter street. The evidence adduced proved nothing beyond the fact that a ijasfitter from the gas works had examined the gas meter on the day of the fire, and used matches in examination. The jury returned a verdict to tho effect that the fire originated in the meter box, either from the meter or pipes, but there was no evidence to show how it was ignited. SUDDEN DEATH. Ashburton, February G. A man named Henry Callows, an inmate of the Old lien's Refuge here, who went to bathe with three others on Saturday evening, in the Ashburton river, dropped dead directly ho stepped out of the water. He had been suffering from heart disease, and had been au inmate of the home for the last twelve months. Before that he was for some years a resident of Timaru. He was a native of Ireland, only 22 years of age, and a great favorite in the Home. The deceased was buried this morning, an inquest being considered unnecessary. THE GRAVING DOCK. Insurance (on building) : [South British, £200: Standard, £200. (On stock): £200 in South British. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Robert Findlay was committed for trial for attempted suicide.
