BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Borough Council met on Monday. Present : His Worship the Mayor, Messrs. Bellringer, Sheppce, Cock, Hooker, King, Davis, Nicoll, and Boswoll. Crown Grant. — A notification was received from the District Land Registrar to the effect that the Crown grant for 2000 acres of laud at Ngaire was ready for issue, on payment of fees amounting to £7 10s. Coupons. — A letter was read from A. C. Fife complaining that the Bank of New Zealand at Wellington bad not received authority to pay the coupons on Borough loan. — On the motionof Mr. King, seconded by Mr. Hooker, it was resolved, "Th.it the Bank of New Zealand be authorised to make the following unpaid coupons issued by the Council payable at the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington :— -Nob. 31 and 33." New Zealand Exhibition. — A letter was received from the sub-committee appointed by the Christchurch Industrial Association Exhibition Committee, requesting the Borough Council to forward exhibits showing the mineral wealth of the district. — The Town Clerk said that the only one who would be likely to send exhibits of that class was Mr. E. M. Smith. Mr. Smith had sent exhibits to Melbourne, and they had not been returned to him yet. — Mr. Bbllrinqer proposed, ''That the Council forward any exhibits it may receive for exhibition, but that the Council will not be responsible for them." — Mr. Cock seconded the motion. — Mr. Nicoll proposed as an amendment, '' That £10 be allowed to the Council as a committee, to use as they think proper." — Mr. Boswell seconded.— The amendment was put and carried. Ocerseer of Water Works. — A letter was received from Mr. W. Sands asking to be appointed overseer of Water Works. — The letter was referred to Messrs. Barr and Oliver. Gover-streef. — A letter was received from the Rev. Mr. Breach requesting the Council to lay down some drain pipes in Goverstreet opposite his property. — The letter was referred to the Works Committee. Water Works. — A notice was received from Mr. S. Matthews claiming £473 for the land proposed to be taken by tho Borough Council for Water Works. Water Work* Committee. — The report of the Water Works Committee was read as follows : — Resolved, "That as Mr. S. Matthews, through his solicitors Messrs. Standish and Husrhes, has sent in a claim of £473 15s. for compensation for 12 acres 3 roods and 32 perches of land taken for the Borough Water Works under the " Public Works Act, 1876," this Committee recommend the Council to appoint Messrs. nempton, N. King, and J. C. Davies as valuators to assess the same, and send in their report before the next meeting of the Council." — The report was adopted. Finance Committee. — The report of the Fituince Committee was read as follows :—: — Resolved " That £7000 be placed at deposit account for six months, and £6000 for twelve months." — Report adopted. Public Works Committee.— The Public Works Committee's report was as follows : — The Public Works Committee met on the 16th January. Tenders for gravel were opened : M. S. Daniells, £67 14s. for 500 yards ; H. Eva, 2s. 6d. per yard ; Henry Okey, £68 15s. for 500 yards • G. Thompson and C. Evitt, 3s. lid per yard ; E. Moore, £69 19s. 6d. for 500 yards ; Davidson and Julian, 3s. lid. per yard. Resolved " That Michael S. Daniels' tender at £67 14s. 2d. be accepted." The Committee met on the 27th January. Resolved " That Mr. James Sanderson's plans for a shop for Mr. J. Veale, jun., in Devon-street, be approved of, on consideration that the footpath be kept in repair, and nothing to project over the curbstone." " That the sum of 30s. be given to Mr. Ncwland, sen., with the understanding that in future he keep the frontage of his premises free from sand." The Committee met on the 2nd Fcbrua.y. Resolved " That the gutter on the west side of Maorioot Hill be paved, as it is dangerous in its present state to vehicles." — The report was adopted. Removal of Lamp-post. — Mr. Cock wished to know why the lamp opposite Mr. Gilmonr's shop was not lighted. — Mr. Bellringer said the reason was that Mr Gilmour objected to it. The original lamppost was removed to allow Mr. Gilmour to erect a verandah, and it was agreed that another lamp should be made and fixed on one of the verandah posts, but when the lamp was made Mr. Gilmour objected to it, alleging it made his house look like a " pub." — Mr. Davis thought that the lamp should have been lighted notwithstanding Mr. Gilmour's objection. — Mr. Bellhinger said that the lamplighter had never been ordered not to light it. Notice of Motion. — Mr. Cock gave notice that he would move at the next meeting of the Council — "That two gas lamps bo placed opposite the Town Hall." Accounts. — Receipts, £229 ; expenditure, £177 18s. Bd. ; loan account expenditure, £03 os. lid. Stale of Liardct-street. — Mr. Bellrfkoer alluded to a paragraph in the Heualk re the state of Li.irdct struct ; and said that the Botanical Gardens Board were to blame for leaving the street in that condition. The Council then adjourned.
