We have. been informed that sixty-three applications to register votes were received in New i Plymouth yesterday, all being for votes in the Egmont'Electoral District. 1 Mr. Wilfred Rennell has been appointed Registrar of Electors for the Electoral Districts of the Town of New Plymouth and Taranaki, and ¥r. Alfred Trimble for that of Egmont.
The-A.C- Force have received a refund of the10 per cent, reduction which was taken off tHeir pay for the month of July. 'They, hovveTot, have received notice that the pay in" future will be (ss. per diem instead of 6s. 6d. :The Mammoth Gift Show Company will, give another performance in Courtney's Hall th,is evening, when the programme will be eritirely changed. After the performance there will be a liberal • display of gifts distributed amongst the audience, another gold ■ wklch being given away, ,It h as ! been suggested' that? a Veteran Volnn- ' tepr Corps should be formed, consisting of drilled ,mea who have been in active service. It' is, believed that a sufficient number of such mea.fiould be found to form a corps ; and, j if such is the case, it would be a matter of considerable importance to have at least one thoroughly efficient and reliable Company of i Volunteers. Probably the matter will be ! discussed at the meeting <;onv«!»ed by Major Stapjv'to -foe held at the Court-house this evjeniug. Thc's.'s. Hawea, Captain Kennedy, left Port Chalmers pu tue ( 2<Jth September, at 1.45 p.m., and arrive I at_Akaroa on the 27th, at ."i.15 a.m. ; sailed at 6.13 a.m. for Lyttelton, and arrived at 10.25 a.m. ; sailed at 3.45 p.m. for Wellington, and arrived on the 28th, at 8.30 a.m.-; sailed on the 29th, at 1.30 p.m., for Picton,. and arrived at (i.30 p.m. ; sailed at midnight, for Nelson; and arrived on the 30th, at 1 1 a.m. ; sailed at 11 p.m., for Taranaki, and arrived on the Ist October, at 1 p.m.
The little steamer L ilia Rookh, which trades between . Waitara and Manukau is very smartly handled ; by Captain Eobinson, who has command of her. ' She arrived yesterday at 12.30' p.m.; steatned up to the upper wharf and landed a part, of her cargo. She then went to the lower ' wharf, and after getting out .tjie .^mswnder of her cargo, took in cattle arid Kteataeii out of the Waitara for Manukau v by four o'clock, being only about three and 'a halfnlioucs iv the' river. Such smart. work certainly Reserves to be recorded, and although we did not receive these particulars from oar correspondent, yet our authority for it comes from a very reliable sonce. • ■ Te Whiti, at Parihaka, feeling his influence waning, would * re-establish himself i,n the minds of his followers, but he deals in j ambiguity of speech — his last warlike oration has puzzled many. He is an astute reasoner, but a clever humbug, and, like Friar Tuck, in Ivanhoe, who knew what King Richard could do by one blow, so Te Whiti realises that the pakehaVblow, when given, will be an extinguisher, and neither he nor his devotees mean - to try that blow. "Up Guards, and at them !" would be the soul-inspiriug words of our sjallant forces now on the Plain. We understand that the stores at Hawera, Manaia, and Opunake supply Sharland's Baking Powder to the A.C. Force, and this accounts for the line physique of these gallant fellows, who, one and all, declare that the rnoa (more) they use it the moa (more) they like it. 1
