URENUI.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] May 17. — Better late than never, I suppose. I notice that the County Council lias put some men at work on the road between here and Waitara to patch up the bad places, I suppose before the wet sets in. I think it wouM have been much better if it had been done four months ago. Then any earth removed would have had a chance of getting set before the winter's rain commences. Now if heavy rains come it will be simply an accumulation of mud. Messrs. C. N. Rowc and Bluck have completed No. 2 contract across the Urenui River (the new road from the bridge), and they expect to finish No. 1 contract this side in about two weeks' time. The new bridge will not be finished for about six weeks. The natives left here Ust week for Parihaka, to welcome the prisoners back. I expect the Urenui lot back this week. The member for Grey and Bell addressed his constituents down here on Wednesday last. Mr. Curtis was voted to the chair, but as I was unavoidably absent I have not sent you a report of the meetiig. I believe the speech was a repetition of his speeches at other places. A vote of thanks and confidence was passed by the meeting. I trust that this coming session members will set themselves fairly to work, and not indulge in a lot of useless talk, which is of no real benefit to the country. Let us have some sound legislation on education, and an alteration of the system with a decrease in the expense, which at present is something fearful. It is to be hoped that some sound scheme will be brought forward for the better carrying on of local public works, &c. Last session the Colonial Treasurer in his Financial Statement, at the beginning of the session, was going to give us all sorts of lollypops, but it ended by the Government taking away the 20 per cent, of the Land Fund from the Counties and giving us the miserable Is. Gd. in the £ for nine months. We are paying heavy taxes and customs' duties, and getting very little for it : so if our member wishes to be returned at the next election, let him attend to these two or three important questions, which are decidedly now being freely discussed throughout the district.
