FOX'S TEMPERANCE PRIZES.

The examination in the Temperance Lesson Book for Sir VV Fox's prize is to take place in December, 1882. Four examination districts are constituted, one prize being- given to each of the following districts : — Wellington, Wanganui, Hawke'a and Taranaki to form the v orth Island District, containing U,5G9 children according to working average in December quarter, 1880 ; Nortli Canterbury District, containing 12,233 children ; Otago District, excluding Counties of Tuapeka, Bruce, and Ciutha, 2,544 children ; and Westland, South Canterbury, Southland and Bruce, Tuapeka, and Ciutha. Counties, 12,331 children. The examination is to be by printed papers, supplied from here, and submitted to examiners appointed by Sir William Fox. The Auckland, Marlborough, and Nelson Boards were refused.

A MAN'S SIGHT RESTORED.

UHRISTCHDBCH, May 19. With reference to the man Hudson who was scut down to the ChristchurchHospital by the Patea County Council, sight has been completely restored to his left eye, and it is hoped that within two or three weeks the remaining eye will be in equally good order.

LIBEL CASE.

Bruce, May 19. The Standard has been served with a writ for libel by the Rev. Mr. Seahorn, who is now on a tour delivering readings and recitations. Damages are laid at £500.

ANOTHER CASE OF SUICIDE.

Dunedin, May 18. Peter Hodgekirk, expressman, committed suicide, by hanging, last night. On his body, a letter was found stating the canse oi the act — separation from his wife and family. Last week his wife sued him for maintenance. The letter added, "I suppose the jury will bring in iusanity, but I am not insane, and never was."

TAEARUA RELIEF FUND.

Captain Garrard boing- an excellent swimmer, surprise has been expressed that he did not swim ashore. It now transpires from the position of the body when fouad that he evidently did try to swim, but that he was caught in the keel.

A CELESTIAL FOUND DEAD.

A Chinaman was found dead in a water race in the Hindon district, in only two inches of water. He had been dead about three weeks. The verdict of the jury at the inquest was thafc death bad been caused by an epileptic fit.
