POLICE COURT.

Assault. — Jainc Bntlcr»vorth was charged with having committed an assault upon Willia'n Humphries yesterday, by shaking him and handling him roughly. — Mr. Govcbt appcarc I for the defendant, and said his client would plead guilty to the charge. The assault was committed while the defendant was under the influence of liquor, and arose out of a dispute between the complainant and defendant aboub the possession of some property. The defendant became excited, and laid hold of Mr. Humphries and shook him. He (Mr. Govett) hoped tho Court would deal leniently with the defendant, as he had been arrested and locked-up for several hours. — Mr. Humphries said he did not wish to pres6 the charge, as he was sure the defendant would not have committed the assault at all had he not been under the influence of liquor. Ie was necessary for his (Mr. Humphries") own protection that he took the course hedi \, and had the defendant locked-up. He did not, however, think the defendant would repeat the offence. — His Worship ordered the defendant to pay the cost of the proceedings, and to find a surety in £20 to keep the peace for six months. This concluded the business.
