MELBOURNE TEMPERANCE CONFERENCE.
It having been decided to hold an International Temperance Conference in Melbourne, on the 9th November next and following days (says the Argus), a meeting of the general committee took place on Friday night, in the Temperance Hall, Russell- street, Mr. John Toon occupying the chair. It was reported that the prospectuses had been widely circulated, not only through the Australian Colonies and New Zealand, but also in Great Britain and America, and that replies, promising assistance both financially and in papers for discussion, had been received from several of the leading abstainers in this and the adjoining Colonies. The conference is to be divided into four sections, treating the temperance question in its political, economical, medical, religious, and social aspects, and chairmen were nominated for each section. It was suggested that several of the leading churches in Melbourne should be applied to to hold temperance seryces on the Sunday succeeding the sittings of the conference.
