First Day, September 6. — Tht cricket match between the Australians and an All England Eleven was witnessed by 39.000 people. Spofforth did not play, in cousequence of one of his fingers being broken iri the match against Eighteen of Scarborough. Second day, September 7. — The match was resumed, but owing to rain overnight the wickets were very dead. The remaining English batsmen were soon disposed of, the innings terminating for a total of 420 runs. The following are the scores of All England in first innings :— W. G. Grace, 152 ; Dr. E. M. Grace, 36 ; A. P. Lucas, 55 ; W. Barnes, 28 ; Lord Harris, 52 ; F. Perm, 23 ; A. G. Steel 42 ; Hon. A. Lyttleton, 11 ; G. F. Grace, 0 ; A. Shaw, 0 ; F. Morley (not out), 2 ; Extras, 19.— Total, 420. Australians, first innings : — Murdoch, 0 ; Bannerman, 32 : Groube, 10 ; McDonnell, 29; Bonner, 2 ; Boyle (not out), 36 ; Blackham, 0 ; Slight, 11 ; Palmer, 6 ; Alexander, 6"; Moule. 6 ; Extras, 12.— Total, 149. The Australians, being 271 runs behind, had to follow their innings : — Murdoch (not out), 79 ; Bannerman, 8 ; Groube, 0 ; McDonnell, 43 ; Slight, 0 ; Blackham, 19 ; Bonner, 13 ; Boyle, 3 ; Extras, 5. — Total, 170 (for six wickets).
