CRICKET.

A MEETING of persons intereate I in the game of cricket has b^en called for this evening by the Hon. Secretary of the Taranaki Cricket Club, to consi ler ani discuss the t question ot forming a cricket ground.

The want of a recreation ground in a central position has boon very much felt here, and has always been a serious drawbick to cricke , and to the youths who wish to take the exercise so necessary to develop their strength. There are several places available, and might be made suitable by the necessary outlay. Poverty Flat is the most central, and many a good game has been played on it in the old days, when the troops were here to prepare a wicket. It is now too rough, and woul I cost, more to level and fence than, coul-i be accomplished by cricketers alone. In the Recreation Ground there is an uusightly swamp, which would make a sweet spot for a small cricket ground ; but to drain and fill it in — "there's the rub." Tnen comes the racecourse, svhere there is plenty of room to mtke a magnificent cricket ground, at comp iratioely small expense. The distance from town is against it, but there are other advantages which cpmpensate. The Jockey Club are the present lessees, and would, doubtless, be ready to meet the cricketers in their desire to improve the ground, which can be done if an energetic Committee take the matter in han-1. Cricket has been ia a languishing state for some time, au>l last season there was not a match played in town in consequence of there being no suitable ground. There is plenty of talent in the place, but good players do not care to risk playing on bad ground. Something shoull be <ione, if only for the sake of the rising generation.
