A HOAX, London, August 18. A report was current to-day that two barrels of gunpowder had been found in a railway tunnel under the Cork Barracks ; but on enquiry the whole thing proved to be a hoax. WOOL SALE. At the wool sales to-day, 10,600 bales ! were offered, making a total of 17,500 bales since the opening. The tone of the market showed a better demand, and prices were firmly maintained. SHIP ARRIVED. Arrived : Coromandel, from Port Chalmers, May 6. EMPLOYERS' LIABILITY BILL. London, August 19. In the House of Commons, the Employers' Liability Bill has been passed. AFFAIRS IN IRELAND. Mr. W. E. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, has started suddenly for Ireland. His m'ssion, however, is at present unknown. Later. — It now transpires that Mr. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, has gone to that country with the object of enquiring whether coercive measures are necessary for the suppression of the disorder now prevailing there.
GLADSTONE GOES TO MADEIRA. Ifc is announced that Gladstone will proceed to Italy or Madeira in a fortnight's time, for change of air. SERIOUS FLOODS IN GERMANY. Berlin, August 19. Serious storms and floods in Prussia have caused great damage to a large extent, and destroyed the grazing crops. DISMISSAL. Constantinople, August 19. Hafiz Pasha has been dismissed.
