The Taranaki Herald. PUBLISHED DAILY. THURSDAY, AUGUST 19, 1889.

Judgment was given to-day, in the case of Irvine v. the Harbour Board. His Worship considered the plaintiff was entitled to recover the sum of £17 14s. from the defendants, and gave judgment accordingly with costs. The G.S. Hinemoa is expected to arrive here from Wellington to-morrow, for the purpose of transferring the native prisoners now in the New Plymouth gaol to the gaol at Lyttelton. Mr. A. Wood put his collar-bone out of joint to-day in jumping from a dray, the horse having taken fright and bolted. The accident happened near the rise at the Wai ttftkaiho. A preliminary enquiry was held yesterday at Waitara by the Collector of Customs into the stranding of the s.s. Eowena and ketch Forest Queen. The evidence taken at it we have to hold over till to-morrow. An accident happened yesterday morning to Mr.W. Longstaff, of Bell Block. He was riding a young horse which was rather spirited, and it became unmanageable, eventually throwing him with great force to the ground. Mi\ Longstaff received two nasty wounds on the face, and also had one of his ribs fractured. Dr. Ilawson was sent for and attended to the injuries. The sufferer is progressing favourably towards recovery. We have to acknowledge the receipt of the Health Gazette, a monthly publication published in Wellington, having for its object the bringing to the knowledge of the colonists matters connected with sanitary science and hygiene, new medicines, newer and better methods of removing disease, advancements made in social science, domestic econom} 1 ", new inventions, and improvements for the farm, garden, orchard, and household. The publication is royal quarto in size, and consists of eight pages. The original matter is ■well written, and the extracts well selected. It is printed at the Wanganui Herald office in a very creditable manner ; but in these days of ten per cent, reductions we fear persons will not be able to indulge in luxuries of the kind.
