Tby cable] Calcutta, August 17. — Intelligence lias been received from Afghanistan that a large body of Pathans attacked a British garrison at Kaihmadaua, but were repulsed, pursued, and a severe loss inflicted on them. Calcutta, August 18. — Further information is to hand that states that Ayoub Khan has commenced bombarding Candahar, and that the British forces are acting on the defensive. News also comes to hand that the citadel at Candahar is invested on three sides by Ayoub Khan's army. General Stewart reports that he has reached Ganclamak with the British force which was left at Cabul after General Roberts' departure for Candahar, and the evacuation of Cabul is now completed.
