[per united press association.] LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Thursday, July 15.— The Council, after sitting five minutes, adjourned out of Tespect to the Hon. Mr. Edwards, one of its oldest members, news of whose death, at Nelson, had just been received. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Thursday, July 13. — The House met at 2.30. In replying to questions, it was stated that the Government did not think it would be of use to call for tenders for the supply of telegraph forms, as the Colonial offices could not compete with the Home offices. The matter, however, would be considered. Mr. 13 ryce introduced the Maori Prisoners Bill, and stated that, to meet the circumstances of the case, he would ask that it pass through all its stages to-morrow. The following Bills were also introduced and real the first time : — Educatiou Reserves Amendment, Wanganui River Conservators' Board Grant. The following Bills were read a second time : — Port Molyneux Reserves, " Leasing Act, 187(J Amendment," Taranaki Iron Smelting Works, "Land Act, 1874, Amendment," " Oainaru Waterworks Act, 1875, Amendment," "Public Health Act, 1870, Amendment." The following Bills passed through Committee :—lnvercargill: — Invercargill Drill Shed Site, Sydenhain Borough Council Empowering, and Bluff Harbour Foreshore. • On the motion of Sir G. Grey, it was agreed, " That the House in future meet on Mondays." Sir G. Grey moved the appointment of a Committee to enquire into the petition of L. Ehren fried, of the Thames, complaining of the manner in which certain licenses had been refused at the Thames. Mr. Hall objected, and stated tliat the Public Petitions Committee was quite competent to deal with the subject. On a division the motion was lost — Ayes, 27 ; Noes, 32. The following motions were carried : — Mr. JONES moved, " That all correspondence connected with the appointment of Mr. H. Houghton, of Duncdiu, to the position in the Government Life Insurance and Annuities Department be laid before the House." Mr. Luxdon moved, '• That a report of the | Waste Lands Committee, on the petition of J. Hastie, be referred back to the Committee for reconsideration." Mr. Turnbull moved, •'•' That there be laid before the House a paper connected with the pardon of Edward James, convicted of fonjery at Timaru." The House then adjourned at 5.30.
