AN EDITOR GETS IT « HOT." Auckland, Jnly 15. Wickhara, proprietor of the Auckland Free Lance, had his nose severely pulled yesterday by a member of the Frolique Company, for condemning- their entertainment, before seeing it, as " anoilier lot of Yankee trash." The other newspapers speak well of the performance. Wickbara did not get an advertisement, wbich is supposed to be the cause of bis animup.
EARTHQUAKE SHOCK. Ojunrmutit, July 15. A sharp shock of earthquake occurred at VVairoa, a few tnilos from Lake Rotomahana, ou Wednesday morning 1 . REDUCTION IN CHARGE AT LAKES. Last night a meeting was held at Wairoa by Ngatehinemiki and Tuhougangi Tribes for the purpose of drawing up a new scale of charges to the Rotomahana terraces. The charges are to be reduced and tribes amalgamated. SUICIDE. Wellington, July 15. Jane Kiiza Leatwack, a widow, aged 5G years, committed suicide by taking rat poison. She was in straitened circumstances, which is believed to have been the canso of her suicide. THE UNEMPLOYED. The City Council intend to resume stone-breaking, to afford employment to a large number of men. The Government will probably send a further detachment of meu to Patea. MINING ACCIDENT AT KUMARA. Kumaiu, July 15. The body of John Phelan was recovered shortly before 5 o'clock this morning, and buried with the two others — Denis (his brother) and Phillip Cumin ings. The funeral was attended by nearly a thousand persons. All the places of business were closed in the town, and very few claims on the goldfields were worked duriug the day. STICKING UP AT WAIHOA. TIMARU, July IC. Both of the men coucerned in the late stickiug-up case at Waihoa were brought before the Resident Magistrate at Waimate. Their name? are Eugene Ford and W. Pollhot. EXTENSION OF WORKS. Christchurch, July 15. The Kaiapoi Woollen Factory Company held their half-yearly meeting today. The report showed a balance oi £2,6^9 on the half-year. It was resolved to extend the capital to £1,000,000 in twenty-five shares, as the present machinery is quite incapable of supplying the demand for goods. A DOCTOR CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER. Invercargill, July 15. The investigation of the charge of manslaughter against Dr. Moffatt, of Winton, was resumed at the Police Courc to-day, and resulted in the accused being committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court, bail being allowed accused — himself, £200 ; and two others at £200.
