The action of the Government in instructing the -Engineer-in-Charge of the gold fields to afford what assistance was necessary to recover the bodies of the men buried in the Sludge Channel, meets with general approbation. At a meeting of raineis last night it was resolved to volunteer to tell off one man from every claim on the field to form shifts for the recovery of the bodies. Operations were commenced early this moruing, and will continue until the bodies are found. From the dangerous nature of the ground it will probably be a week before the workers can arrive at the spot whore the men are supposed to have been killed. The contractor's loss is estimated at £500 through the accident occurring, as it involves putting down a new shaft and the removal of all machinery.
